HW Dolphins: June 2 Updates

Hello Dolphins!

You may notice a new group of swimmers at the pool this week – our Dolphin Pups start Monday and will be learning to swim for the next 3 weeks from 9-9:30 a.m. Please help them feel welcome and encouraged.

Once again, lots of info about the week is in this email, plus the 2025 team picture is attached!

First Meet
Thank you to everyone for staying upbeat during the rain showers at last week’s meet. We appreciate the positive attitude, flexibility and willingness to get wet! We especially want to say a big THANK YOU to first half volunteers working and trying to write in the rain – timers, officials and bullpen volunteers! Your leadership team has made lots of notes for things to do and adjust if we have another very wet meet.

The Dolphins were the winners of the meet: 443-237. All those points means the meet was truly a team effort! Two team records were broken – Emersyn Olojo in the 10U girls 25 backstroke and Alex van Maanen, Grant Fennell, Theo Channavong, and Isaac Wold in the boys 12U medley relay. On Friday Coach Brown recognized those record-breakers and other swimmers who made great improvements and/or contributions to the team. The Swimmers of the Week were: Jonah Roper, Logan Hall, Xander Kersey, Presley Dollar, Emma Kate Whitten and Annalise Ulrich. These swimmers get to take home a “Swimmer of the Week” yard sign to put in their yard for the week.

RESULTS for meets can be found each week on the calendar page of our website – click the link to “past events”. For swimmers and families interested in the top times in the Gwinnett County Swim League each week, the League posts the top 75 on its website. At the end of the season, these rankings are used to determine the top 50 in each event who will be invited to compete at the County Meet.

THANK YOU to our first-half Starter DJ Olojo for not only keeping the rainy meet very upbeat, but also purchasing a sound system for the meet (a huge improvement from last year!) and bringing his own tent to cover the Starter area! THANK YOU to Adrianne Leonard and family for pressure washing the muddy bullpen on Friday morning! THANK YOU Trisha Atkins & Scott Shackelford for putting together an amazing concession stand that raised funds for the team!

Second Meet
This week the Dolphins are traveling to Flowers Crossing for our second meet of the season. Flowers Crossing is one of the biggest teams in the league and the 2024 County Champions, so expect the meet to run a little later than last week, the parking to be a little more crowded and the competition in the pool to be fierce.

Swimmers should arrive by 5 p.m. on Thursday, as our warm-ups begin at 5:20 p.m. We should receive more details about the meet – specifics on address, parking, spectator seating, etc — from the Mighty Marlins early this week, and we will share that info with our team when we have it.

Stroke Clinic
This week’s stroke clinic will focus on turns. Our older swimmers, who swim two laps of the pool in meets, are encouraged to come. And even our younger swimmers, who swim 50 yard freestyle in meets, can come learn how to do or improve flip-turns. Remember that the Stroke Clinic cost is $10 per swimmer. Cash is preferred but Venmo is also accepted. Please pay Coach Eric Brown. The Clinic is limited to 20 swimmers, and RSVP will open at 8 p.m. today.

Fun Friday
A big thank you to the Mayhew Family for sponsoring this week’s Fun Friday. The theme this week is Fire & Ice! Please RSVP on our Swimtopia website so our hardworking Fun Friday volunteers know how many treats to purchase.

We’ll have another special event on Friday – a summer book exchange! You may have noticed that new this year is our Free Little Library, a donation from the Atkins family. The Atkins family also donated several more boxes of books, and we’ve heard other families would love to donate as well. So, on Friday, bring any books you’d like to donate and place them in the area near the Free Little Library and team info board. And, come ready to pick up some new books for the summer – kids and adult books welcomed!
