April Reminders: Spiritwear & Volunteers

ORDER 50th ANNIVERSARY SPIRIT WEAR!

A reminder that the deadline to order spirit wear is April 30 -- less than two weeks away! This year is special as we feature a throwback design (hoodie, sweatshirt, t-shirt, cap & visor), plus our team shirt with a unique 50th logo (plus hoodie, women's tank top) and a team car magnet. You know you'll want to show your team spirit once the season starts! Plus, these designs look so good, they'd make great gifts for your swimmers' cheerleaders too (maybe granddad's gift for Father's Day?).

THANK YOU!

A BIG THANK YOU to Angie Thomas for volunteering to step into the role of Spiritwear Coordinator this season, helping us organize and distribute team caps, shirts and all the special spirit wear ordered for the season.

A BIG THANK YOU to Jeff Schaefer and Steven Hammond for volunteering to train as starters this season alongside our veteran starters Jamie Kruger and DJ Olojo.

A BIG THANK YOU to our certified stroke and turn officials Kelly Blake, Adis Malkoc, Ann Malkoc, Andy Mercer, Rachel Rennick and Paul Vaughan. We still need 3 to 4 additional parents to volunteer in this essential meet role – please see additional info below!

VOLUNTEERS FOR NON-MEET SHIFTS

We still have slots available for parents to volunteer next Saturday, April 27 3-7 p.m. for the Hanarry West Club & Swim Team work day. We’ll be cleaning out, organizing and switching sheds with the Club. There’s also painting and repair needs around the clubhouse and pool deck. To sign up, log into your SwimTopia app or account and go to the team Calendar page.

If you aren’t able to volunteer at one of the work days, the other non-meet volunteer opportunities are:

Spiritwear Organization: May 11, 9-11 a.m. (signup on calendar)

Hanarry West 50th Anniversary Celebration: June 2, 4-8 p.m.

Fun Friday Assistants (1 for each Fun Friday)

County Meet Coordinators (1 for each age group)

Post-season Pool Work Day
*We’ll have sign-ups for these items in May, as we get closer to the start of the season.

VOLUNTEER NEEDS FOR MEETS

Stroke & Turn Judges – Does your kid love the sport of swimming? Do you have a swim background? You might love being a stroke & turn judge! We need an additional three to four parents to train as stroke & turn judges for the 2024 season. The training is free and is done entirely online on your own (and the certification is good for 3 years). In the training you’ll learn about the four strokes and rules of the meet. No one wants to disqualify a swimmer, but it’s an essential part of our meets and the learning process. Plus, you don’t work alone (4 judges at a time) and in summer swim league the “benefit of the doubt goes to the swimmer.” You can read more on our website. Please email us to let us know you are interested or if you have already completed the training this year: [email protected]

Head Timer – The Head Timer serves primarily at our two home meets this season, overseeing all equipment used by the timers and the timers themselves. Prior to the meet, the timer makes sure all stopwatches are in working order and that all pens, clipboards, book lights, etc. that timers need are ready to go. The Head Timer holds two training sessions for timers of the meet – providing a quick but thorough instruction of the role for newer timers and a refresher for experienced ones. The Head Timer may need to serve as a timer during the meet (if there is a no show and a volunteer replacement cannot be found). The Head Timer has a reserved seat in view of all timers so that he/she can step in if there are issues or questions. The Head Timer will collect all equipment at the conclusion of the meet and place it back in the team shed. At the three away meets, this role would bring our team’s stopwatches to the meet and collect them at the conclusion of the meet.

Meet Breakdown Coordinator – Are you a night owl? Do you enjoy watching the meet and would love to work after the meet? This role might be for you! At the conclusion of our two home meets, work to breakdown the setup for the meet and get the pool deck back to its normal state. Breakdown Coordinator would direct other volunteers in moving furniture, loading the shed, cleaning up trash and other items, etc. Coordinator would follow the breakdown checklist to ensure everything is cleaned up and the pool enclosure is ready for the morning.
