June 19: Updates from HW Dolphins
Fifth Meet: Thursday, June 22 at Evergreen Lakes
The Dolphins head to Evergreen Lakes (near the Mountain Park Library) to take on the Eels in Thursday’s meet. It’s not far to travel and the Eels are a fun, competitive team … so it should be a great night! Coach Brown will be sending out an email on Wednesday with the heat sheet.
We are in the final days of collecting gifts for our 15 coaches. If you would like to express your appreciation to your swimmers’ coaches in this way please donate by Friday, June 23. Several people have asked for suggested donation amounts… $10-15 per swimmer would allow us to gift each of the 15 coaches with a nice cash gift. We’ll present the cash gift, along with a small sentimental gift, at the Last Chance Meet.
There are two ways to donate:
1. Cash or check in the blue donation boxes at practice
2. Venmo: Hanarry-Swim-Team and indicate “coach gifts”
Last Week’s Results & Thank You
You can view results from last week’s meet on the “past events” tab of our website’s calendar. The Gwinnett County Swim League also posts the top times from the league on its website each week as some swimmers aim to quality for the County Meet in July. You should have received an email on Sunday with FAQs and details about the County Meet.
BIG THANK YOU to Jenn Jones for coming early to help with setup at the meet Thursday. Lots of others pitched in to help with setup and breakdown too … and the rumor is it was the smoothest setup and breakdown yet!
BIG THANK YOU to Holli Brown, Cindy Nanny and Megan Cuevas for emptying trash cans and restocking the bathrooms during Thursday’s meet.
BIG THANK YOU to Steven Humfleet for purchasing a wireless mic for the team to use during meets and team events. It’s made huge difference already!
Fun Friday Sponsor: Newcastle Neighborhood
Thank you to the Newcastle Neighborhood for sponsoring our last Fun Friday of the season, which will feature frozen treats and pool toys. Please RSVP by EOD Tuesday so our volunteers can have an accurate headcount. Once again, many thanks to Adrianne Leonard and Rachel Rennick for the many hours and energy that went into planning and executing these fun events for Dolphins of all ages.
Sign Up for Stroke Clinics
Our last stroke clinic of the season is Breaststroke on Friday, June 23. Clinics are $10 cash (or Venmo) per swimmer due the morning of the clinic. Sign up on SwimTopia in the Calendar section. A big thank you to all the coaches for being willing to organize and lead these clinics the morning after a meet – it’s not something offered by every team in the league.
Last Chance Meet: Monday, June 26
Register your swimmer for this meet, which features only our team, by 10 a.m. Friday, June 23 AND indicate in the comments section of your RSVP which events your swimmers would like to swim. Coach Brown will be encouraging kids to take this opportunity to try a new event …or for those close to qualifying for the County Meet, push themselves one last time.
Our Last Chance Meet will feature individual events only (no relays), end-of-the season awards and the kid-favorite Glow Swim. Don’t forget to pack your lanyards for your pins (new swimmers will receive these that night) and glow items for your kids.
Volunteer Needs
Starters
You may have noticed that starters from visiting teams have worked at our meets this season. With only three trained HW starters and some extenuating circumstances this summer, we’ve asked other teams to help us fill this role. We NEED additional starters to be trained (starters are also trained Stroke & Turn Judges). Please let us know if you have any interest. Our Last Chance Meet, which is just our team, would be a great opportunity to shadow and learn firsthand about the role.
Stroke & Turn Judges
We are also in need of additional judges for next season. You might have noticed the 2 judges on each end of the pool during meets (wearing white shirts and navy pants). They have a wonderful view of the whole meet – and their training is just two hours online. Our Last Chance Meet would offer a great opportunity to anyone interested in shadowing this position.
Leadership Team
Our leadership team is looking for parents to take on leadership roles in specific areas such as: meet breakdown, head timer, head judge, sponsorships and local business donations, design and ordering of spirit items (like t-shirts, pins, ribbons, special recognition items), and some additional activities related to our 50th Anniversary (collecting past photos, celebrations, etc.). If you aren’t sure where your skill set (and time) might best fit the team’s needs, please reach out and just chat with us before the season ends – no commitment. [Although last summer, I did tell the team managers I send great emails. :) ]
